Koa's study blog turned two weeks old this weekend. Fourteen days, fourteen shades of pink, and a lot of posts about how to study a little better without making it miserable. So today Koa sat down with a cup of cocoa and picked the five ideas she keeps coming back to. If you only read one post this month, make it this one.
1. Short blocks beat heroic marathons
A timed block (25, 50 or 90 minutes, whatever fits you) turns "study all afternoon" into something you can actually start. The point is not the exact number, it's having a clear start, a clear stop and a real break in between. If you're unsure which length fits you, the 25/5 vs 52/17 vs 90 minutes post walks through all three. The free study timer on pinkoa.com has one-click presets for each.
2. Breaks are part of the plan, not a reward
Finland is famous for this one: Finnish schools usually give pupils a 15-minute break for every 45 minutes of lessons, and a lot of it is spent outside. Koa loves that the break is built into the timetable instead of being earned. Stand up, drink water, look out of a window, then come back. More in what Finland teaches us about study breaks.
3. Test yourself instead of re-reading
This is the most research-backed idea on the whole blog. In a well-known 2006 study, psychologists Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke had students either re-read a text or practise recalling it. On a test one week later, the students who practised recalling remembered more, even though re-reading felt more effective. Close the book, write down what you remember, then check. It's uncomfortable, and that's the point.
4. Streaks help, but one missed day doesn't break anything
In a 2010 study from University College London, Phillippa Lally and colleagues followed 96 people building a new daily habit. On average it took 66 days for the behaviour to feel automatic, with a huge range from 18 to 254 days. The kind part: missing a single day did not meaningfully set people back. So keep the streak gently, and when you miss a day, just pick it up again tomorrow. The full story is in Streaks: why small daily wins work.
5. Make your space a place you want to sit
Koa is a pink koala, so of course her desk is pink. Colour psychology is less magical than Instagram suggests (we wrote about that honestly in Why pink?), but a tidy, cosy corner makes it easier to sit down and start. Koa keeps a blanket, a glass of water and a cushion within paw's reach. She even has a pillow that simply says "to study hard", which is exactly what pinkoa means in Finnish.
What's next on the blog
October is getting spooky. From tomorrow Koa starts her Pink Halloween season: Finnish harvest traditions, cosy study-with-me sounds for dark evenings and a few costume ideas that cost almost nothing. Spooky, but make it pink.
Shade of the day
No. 14: Watermelon (#FC6C85). A juicy, warm pink with a little coral in it. It pairs beautifully with cream, gold and sage. Fitting for day fourteen: two weeks, fourteen shades, one very proud koala.
Little thank-you for reading: the launch-month code KOA20 still gives 20% off in the shop until 25 October.
