Meet Koa: why a koala is the perfect study buddy

Sleepy Koa crewneck sweatshirt with a pink sleeping koala

Every good study session needs a buddy. Ours is Koa, a small pink koala who lives on pinkoa.com, sits next to your timer and cheers you on. But why a koala? Because real koalas are secretly excellent study role models. Here's what they can teach us.

1. Rest is part of the plan

Koalas rest for around 18 to 20 hours a day, tucked into the fork of a tree. That isn't laziness: their leafy diet gives them very little energy, so they save it for what matters (WWF).

Your brain works in a similar way. Long, unbroken cramming drains you fast, while short focus blocks with real breaks keep you going. That's the idea behind the Pomodoro Technique: 25 minutes of focus, 5 minutes of rest, and a longer break after four rounds. Koa's free study timer on pinkoa.com does the counting for you.

2. Pick one thing and go deep

Koalas are specialists. They eat eucalyptus leaves, which are toxic to most animals, and have special liver enzymes and gut bacteria to cope with them (WWF). About a kilogram of leaves a day, one mouthful at a time.

Study lesson: stop multitasking. Choose one topic per focus block, write it down, and let everything else wait. Small, steady bites add up.

3. Don't copy the "no drink" part

The word koala comes from the Dharug language of the Sydney region and is often translated as "no drink", because koalas get most of their water from fresh leaves and rarely drink (WWF). Cute, but please don't copy this one. Keep a glass of water on your desk and take a sip every Pomodoro break.

4. Stay close to home base

Wild koalas only live in eastern and south-eastern Australia, in eucalyptus forests and woodlands. They know their patch. A fixed study spot works the same way for us: same desk, same timer, same cosy hoodie, and your brain slips into focus mode faster.

Its complementary colour is a minty aqua, #A6FFDC.
