Behind the scenes: how I built Pinkoa in 6 hours with AI (and what happened next)

Pinkoa: a free pink study timer with Koa the koala

On Thursday 25 September at 15:00, pinkoa.com was just a parked domain in my portfolio. At 21:12 the same evening it was a live shop with a free study timer, printable downloads, merch, a blog and a pink koala called Koa. One week later it runs mostly on its own. This is the whole story, with the tools, the products, the channels and the honest numbers.

The numbers, one week in (2 October)

What Today
Time from idea to live shop about 6 hours
Products in the shop 41 (merch and printables)
Etsy listings 7 printables
Blog posts 9 published, 11 scheduled until Christmas
YouTube "Study with Koa" videos 1 live, 10 scheduled for October
Countries we ship to Germany and the other 26 EU countries
Visits to pinkoa.com 108 (90 people), 11 of them from search
Real orders 0
Running cost about €1 a month (everything else is on free plans)

Yes, still zero sales. That's the honest part, and the reason this post exists: building is the easy part now. Getting found is the hard part.

Pinkoa in numbers

15:01: "what does pinkoa mean?"

I asked Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant, one simple question: what does the word mean, and what could we build around it? I was happy to invest a few hours, but after that it had to run on its own.

The answer set the direction for everything. In Finnish, pinkoa is what you do the night before an exam: you study hard, you cram. (Google's AI overview confidently said it means "to run quickly". It doesn't.) Pink + koala + a study word. Koa was born.

The six hours, step by step

Step Time What came out of it
Plan ~30 min A free study timer to bring people in, printables and merch to earn, pink content every day
Koa and the brand ~1 h A pink koala in five poses, a palette, a wordmark and 15 sticker and print designs
Study timer ~45 min A pomodoro timer in English, German and Finnish
Printables ~1 h A 30-page coloring book, a study planner, 26 wallpapers and a free starter pack
Shop setup ~1.5 h Shopify, payments, German legal pages, collections and menus
Merch ~1 h Mugs, stickers, a tote, a tee and a sweatshirt, printed on demand in Europe
Blog and social ~30 min The first blog posts and 90 days of pink colour posts

My part was mostly decisions and the things only a human can do: creating accounts, connecting payments, and saying "yes", "no" and "make it cuter".

Days 2 to 8: it started running itself

The real goal was never a shop in a day. It was a shop that keeps growing without me. So on day 3 we switched on a daily routine. Every morning at 08:51 Claude:

  • writes and publishes a researched blog post with a cover image,
  • adds three new merch items and one new printable,
  • queues Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, X and Threads posts and pins new products,
  • updates the numbers and leaves me three small tasks to bring in visitors.

The daily routine on autopilot

In the same week the timer became an app for your phone (streaks, rewards, a to-do list, outfits and scenes for Koa, and five background sounds), we opened an Etsy shop, started a YouTube channel and switched the merch to bolder, bigger designs for back-to-school season.

The products, and why we picked them

Every product had to pass one test: would a student actually use it at their desk, or wear it to the library? Here are the ones that best show the idea.

Printables
Printables
Merch
Merch
Koa Starter Pack Koa Starter Pack (free)
The front door. A free download you can grab without paying anything. If people like Koa, they come back.
Koa Pomodoro Tracker Sheets Pomodoro Tracker Sheets (€2.90)
The timer counts your rounds, the sheets let you colour them in. The cheapest way to "own" a bit of Koa, and it fits the free timer perfectly.
Pinkoa Study Planner Pinkoa Study Planner (€8)
Our most complete printable: undated weekly, daily and monthly pages, a pomodoro log and an exam countdown. Digital products cost nothing to make again, so they can be cheap.
One More Pomodoro? Koa Hoodie "One More Pomodoro?" Koa Hoodie (€45.99)
It's back-to-school season in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and hoodie weather. "One more pomodoro?" is the question Koa asks after every round, so it became our catchphrase.
PINKOA Study Hard Club Varsity Tee PINKOA Study Hard Club Varsity Tee (€30.99)
Our first "bold" design. The early merch had small, cute prints that looked generic, so now some items lead with Koa and some with the big PINKOA word mark.
Koa Mug One More Pomodoro Koa Mug "One More Pomodoro?" (€15.99)
The easiest gift for a friend in exam season. Every mug is printed only when someone orders, so nothing sits in a warehouse.

The channels, and why we chose them

Channel Why So far
TikTok #studytok and study-with-me videos are where students actually hang out The only channel with real views so far
Instagram Pink aesthetic, carousels and Reels; the place people check before they buy Posting daily, still very quiet
Pinterest A search engine for planners and printables. Pins keep working for months Slow burn, as expected
YouTube Long "study with me" videos with a timer are searched every day, all year. Shorts bring new viewers to them 10 videos scheduled for October, a new Short every day
Threads Text-first and chatty. Good for polls ("which study sound?") and study tips New this week, posting daily
X Where the build-in-public and indie maker crowd talks. Best for the behind-the-scenes story New this week, posting daily
Etsy A marketplace where people already search for "study planner printable" Live since this week

Facebook can wait. Our audience is students, and with zero budget it's better to do a few channels properly than many badly.

What I learned

  • Start with a story. One Finnish word gave us the name, the mascot, the audience and the tone.
  • Free first. The free timer is the front door. The shop pays for it.
  • Automate the boring, keep the human bits. The AI writes and posts. I answer messages and share the link with real people.
  • Video beats pictures. TikTok got views within days; static posts didn't. More short videos are next.
  • Be careful with confident answers. Even the meaning of the word was wrong in one search result. Check the facts.

Try it

The timer is free, needs no account and works on your phone: start a round with Koa. If you're building something too, I'm happy to answer questions: hello@pinkoa.com.
